I should mention that the images are not displayed in the gallery in the order of ranking, but rather, by the unique ID number of the image, as it was assigned automatically by the database system.
CMPG PhotoWalk of the Inner Harbor

The Central Maryland Photographer’s Guild, Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Photowalk on August 14th, was judged to be a rousing success. The theme was “city life”, The weather was perfect, the track was fast all the walkers were keen to get their best shots, the photo opportunities seemed endless, and the wrap up lunch……. was not on anyone’s diet plan.
A Flickr group ( http://tinyurl.com/2c2gn5u ) has been created to display the pictures taken and all participants are encouraged to come to the CPMG meeting on August 25th which will be devoted to a discussion of the photos taken.

Come join members of the Central Maryland Photographers Guild as they discuss image composition, use of light, and choice of camera lens. Learn the basics of what makes for great nature/landscape photography images and gather ideas for fun people photography.
CMPG members will discuss common technical “how to” questions as well as conceptual foundations of the image making process. Emphasis will be on the use of digital SLR cameras, but not limited to them. Club members will be available for questions at the end of the talk. Many CMPG members have award winning photographs and are professional photographers, using their cameras on a daily basis. Come enjoy and learn from their expertise!

A Solo Traveler in Burma

There is no other country in Southeast Asia with the combination of natural beauty and wonderful people as Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. The country was closed to much tourism to relatively recently and the greatest proportion of tourists in-country now are, in descending order of quantity, Chinese (they share a common border and are allies and trading partners), day-tourists who come over the border at Mae Sot in Thailand and organized luxury bus tours. The repressive military government has impacted the travel infrastructure which is primitive and in poor repair. Although travelers are not at risk from the government, the terrible roads, ancient public buses and idiosyncratic airplane schedules, make solo travel at once difficult and yet more interesting. Lewis Lorton spent the entire allowable 27 days in Myanmar traveling by bus, boat, train, plane, truck-bus, oxcart and even hitched a ride on a rice truck when a bus broke down. During this 27 days, he met a good selection of Myanmar peoples – Chinese hotel-keepers in league with the government, the genteel daughter of a drug lord, a political dissident who had been exiled to a small town, Ghurka refugees from Nepal without papers, merchants and a whole host of wonderful, real people.
This photo presentation will illustrate the tourist high spots for independent travelers in Myanmar – Yangon (formerly Rangoon), Inle Lake, Mandalay, Kalaw, Mt. Popa and the unmatchable Bagan. The ancient city of Bagan was the capital of several ancient kingdoms and is now composed of hundreds of Buddhist temples scattered across a dry plain on the eastern bank of the Ayeyerwaddy River. It is a center of the Buddhist religion and a incomparably beautiful place.
Besides Myanmar, Lew has traveled to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. His latest trip to Asia was in 2007when he spent 5 weeks in Northern Laos, going as far north as Muang Sing on the border of China. He is a devotee of independent travel because it is more fun, more relaxing and much, much cheaper. Lew travels with a Lowepro camera bag and a single small backpack; he hopes to return to SEA soon leading a group of photographers traveling in the independent style.
CMPG Chestertown Imaging Event set for November 1

November 01, 2008 we will be having a CMPG imaging event in Chestertown, MD (on the Eastern Shore).
The schooner SULTANA will be downrigged for the close of its sailing season. This is an annual event that draws many sailing vessels from around the mid Atlantic region. These include the KALMER NYCKEL, PRIDE OF BALTIMORE II, SCHOONER VIRGINIA, A. J. MEERWALD, LADY MARYLAND and the skipjack ELSWORTH to name a few of the 11 or so that will be on display, offering tours and sailing sessions for a fee.

I’m not sure if anyone is interested in reservations for a sailing junket so let me know ASAP and I’ll begin the process of gettin g on-board. At the same time let me know your preference for sailing vessel. Even if you decide not to take a sail, the imaging opportunities are limitless. I’ll set up a schedule for the day after I get YOUR feedback once you have a chance to look at the day’s events. If I get no feedback I’ll simply assume that you will be attending at your pleasure.
Transportation will be by private car. So pick your travel mate(s) as you see fit. We will be having lunch at one of several places in Chestertown to be decided when we know how many will be attending the event.
The following will give you an idea of the sailing cost per vessel and the web site will provide a description of each. Please get back to me with your preferences as reservations will be needed should we “go a sailing”.
