At the recent props outing we discussed the use of M, Av, Tv setting when using flash indoors.  I found this post in dpreview and was wondering if there are any comments about it.

–There is a 'standard' error that many people make when using the Canon flash system. For indoor pics, they set Av, or Tv and expect good results.

Those two modes are used for fill flash (read the manual for full description). Therefor, the camera will not adjust the exposure nor shutter speed to allow for the light from the flash. The result with Av is a long shutter speed and blurry subjects.

Here is how to do indoor flash. (ie, not fill flash)

Select Manual mode.
Set Av, f5.6 (vary this up or down if you want)
ISO 400 (Vary this if you like)

Flash exposure compensation – select + 2/3. Note your results on the histogram and vary this if you need to.
Set the flash to ETTL. Use bounce flash or direct.

I'm sorry you poor Canonites have so much trouble with your use of flash.  With the Nikon creative lighting system we Nikonians can concentrate on the composition and "look" we want and let the camera and strobe take care of the flash.  Cool

The biggest actual difference between the systems is that with the Canon system, you have to use old style flash ratios instead of the range of numbers that Nikon uses. Of course, I do have to admit that the Nikon instruction manuals do a much, much better job of explaining how things work — Canon's never been known for stellar documentation.

I've used the Canon and Nikon systems in all auto and manual modes and find that, once you get your head around either system, both provide excellent results.
